You either get it, or...

...you don't. There is a certain mindset required to enjoy certain tunes or styles of music. And admittedly, Amiina isn't going to reach out and grab you by the throat and demand your attention. But give them a listen; there's not a bad track in this collection, and if it serves as nothing more than ambient music (which it does very well) eventually you might just get around to listening more closely...at which point you'll discover the true depth of this surprising, innovative quartet. Perfect for reading, writing, knitting (naturally) or quiet contemplation.

The Ice to Sigur Rós's Fire

composeur

Around the time that Sigur Rós released their "með suð" album, it was announced that longtime performing partners Amiina would be hopping off future tours and concentrating on their own work. This album, I think, justifies their departure and demonstrates how aurally inventive the quartet is. If Sigur Rós are volcanic, then Amiina are their glacial counterpart—and I feel that both are necessary to capture the Icelandic spirit they present. As a whole, "Kurr" is gorgeous and mostly comforting, but "Rugla" and "Bláfeldur" are especially good.

Rugla

pyrosity

I'm still listening to this and absorbing it as a whole, but Rugla (track 2) is a definite winner. The song speaks quietness and peace into a troubled heart. So beautiful.

Not what I expected

rowleyj

Sigur Ros is probably my favorite band, and so when I heard such glowing praise for this group from other Sigur Ros fans I thought I'd check it out. I was hugely disappointed. I found this album to be incredibly boring and empty. I absolutely love most of the instrumental music (including ambient, which often gets a bad rap for being "boring"), but I feel as if there is very little substance in this album. There are good moments here and there, but they are quickly forgotten and overcome by the lesser moments.

Good

Quietly captivating

dabhaid

Sigur Rós without any of the testosterone - in a good way. Cosy, intimate - like mulled wine around a fireside with friends - occassionally cheery, often delicate and introspective. Rugla a standout for its quiet optimism. Be sure to catch them live if you can.

Lovely and Quiet

Perfect for waking up to slowly. It's also nice to play this music while you read or knit (as the cover suggests) or both. Indeed, it sounds like snow singing. Interesting and lovely.

From the album cover to the last note, this a beautifully warm album. Catchy melodies, nice harmonies, great instruments. I don't even like instrumental stuff, and I LOVE this album. ****

If you're Kurr-ious as to what this sounds like...

Do you like Sigur Ros but wish that they had more i's in their band name? Look no further, mister! I haven't actually heard this, nor do I intend to download it... But if I had to guess, I'd say that "It's OK!"
