Outstanding!

Quite simply an outstanding disc. Litton proves himself to be a superlative interpreter of Mendelssohn, elucidating every nuance of the latter's orchestral textures. The Bergen Philharmonic sounds lovely on this disc, particularly the woodwinds, which have a lot of character (those bassoons in particular!). The usual criticism of Mendelssohn's orchestrations simply do not stand up with playing of this intelligence. The clarity of the string lines is also worth mentioning, aided by the musically correct separation of violins left and right of the stage. You will be compelled to listen to this from start to finish: a very fine outing of the overture is followed by what surely is the best version of the first symphony to date and proof that this fine piece deserves greater attention . The Italien symphony completes the disc and leaves you begging for the next release which will presumably couple 3+5...
