They Say All Music Guide

The avant-garde composer’s work comes directly out of the late-’50s avant-garde; two highly regarded works, The Glass World and A Sound Map of the Hudson River, are extraordinary groundbreaking works that fit into the John Cage school of thought. Breaking the Surface is another conceptual composition — more a form of conceptual sound art — that uses a masterful balance of technology and nature. It contains two works: “Duende,” from 1997, is a vocal work based on a shamanistic ritual performed by Thomas Buckner, and “Delta Run,” dating from 1982, deals with a tragic subject in the loss of a friend. Using environmental sounds interwoven with spoken recordings, the latter piece is like an audio diary of a deeply personal experience, which Lockwood transformed into a graceful and eloquent art form. – Dean McFarlane
