The long-awaited followup from the original indie/dance-pop crossover star
2009 | Label: Smalltown 12 / Phonofile

When Norway’s Anne Lilia Berge Strand blew up with her 2004 Anniemal debut, the number of successful indiepop/dance music crossovers were few: the Knife were nobodies beyond Scandinavia; La Roux, Little Boots, and Lily Allen were still in school; and Robyn hadn’t yet reinvented herself. Annie’s tragic backstory (Tore “Erot” Kroknes, her boyfriend and initial producer, died of a degenerative heart condition at 23) and defiantly playful image (think Kylie Minogue with ten times the mischief) charmed both the Norwegian charts and the international bloggerati. She signed a major label deal in 2007, but walked away from it the following year with a flop single and unreleased album while baby Annies topped the UK pop charts and Lady Gaga conquered America.

Don’t Stop reconfigures what Annie declined to release when her label boss took another job. Her voice may be soft, but her lyrics prove her a discriminating gal who doesn’t mince words: “Let’s do it once or maybe twice/That’ll be enough,” she qualifies in “The Breakfast Song.” Knowing this kinda sass is like a lit match on gasoline to hit-and-run rockers, she shows no mercy on the fifth track, “I Don’t Like Your Band.” “It’s not you, it’s your tunes,”… read more »

Spot On Pop

Annie is so much better than Robyn, whose CD everyone is raving about. This is excellent full on pop. I especially love "my love is better," sounds like Robyn is coming on to the woman she is boasting to. love the Peaches type vibe here!

Worth the Wait

cydonia

Seems like this album has been "about to come out" for two years, and it was worth the wait. Annie's previous album had strong tracks like Heartbeat, Greatest Hit, but I think this is a stronger collection of songs taken as a whole. There is plenty of variety and genre switch-ups, if you truly appreciate cutting edge electronic music production values and Annie's retro-diva style you should enjoy this album. BTW make sure to get the "Antonio" single, which deserved a place on this album.

handle with care

I was expecting so much from Annie's comeback. But this is just an ok collection of songs. The production is a bit lackluster and monotonous and ends up making Annie sound like Kylie on valium. The songwriting isn't memorable either.

Great pop

bagelboy76

This is the best pop album of the year. Terrific tracks like 'hey annie', 'don't stop', and the brilliant 'songs remind me of you' and the mix of pop/electronic make for a great listening experience. Yes it's poppier than 'anniemal' but that is not a bad thing.

Lighten Up And Enjoy!

I too had high hopes for this album. And it exceeded my expectations. Annie's last one was a real bubble gum pop gem. This album is even poppier, even more fun. Lighten up a little and enjoy!!!

Hmmm

MidnightClubbed

I really want to like this, I really do, but so far it's just not doing it for me. It's just not hooky enough. Whereas the tracks on Annimal put the bassline front and foremost this time it's forgotten and drowned out by lackluster synth parts. Annie makes for a reasonable facsimilie of Sarah Cracknell on the downtempo tracks and there are some fun pop songs in here, but nothing quite up to the expected brilliance.

Ugh...what happened?

BrooklynSarah

This album oscilates between not not that great and both not that great and startlingly unoriginal-- you can basically listen to 10 seconds of half these songs and identify who Annie/her producer was trying to channel. By the time I got to the last two tracks I actually had to go listen to "Anniemal" again to make sure I hadn't lost my ear for Annie or something. I am really bummed, another record even halfway as outstanding as "Anniemal" would have made my week. I think my own lofty expectations killed this one for me.

They Say All Music Guide

Annie ran into some obstructions on the way to the release of her second album. Don’t Stop was supposed to come out on Island well over a year before it was finally issued on Norway’s Smalltown Supersound; Island had gone as far as releasing “I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me” as a single and video, as well as a cover of Stacey Q’s “Two of Hearts” as a promotional single, but Annie and Island split, and Don’t Stop finally surfaced with a different track list that included neither “Girlfriend” nor “Hearts.” As on Anniemal, Don’t Stop contains some of the catchiest, most clever dance-pop in circulation, highlighted by the fizzy “I Don’t Like Your Band,” one of three songs produced by Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Florence and the Machine). Nearly as ensnaring as “Chewing Gum,” Annie’s taunting, attitudinal wordplay is in top form, with “It’s not you, it’s your tunes” closely followed by a pointedly insincere-sounding “I feel bad.” The collaborations with Xenomania (five songs), Timo Kaukolampi (three), and Richard X (one) aren’t as powerful, however, with a good handful of their songs no match for Anniemal’s weaker moments. The worst of all, “The Breakfast Song,” has a chorus and call-and-response that resemble a flabby M.I.A. parody. [Some copies came with a bonus disc, the All Night EP, which included "I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me" and some other material that originally leaked prior to the album's release.] – Andy Kellman
