Antibalas, Who Is This America?

Created in a Mexico City hotel in 1997 by founder Martin Perna, Antibalas (the name means "anti-bullets") give trance-like, epic performances that are equal parts dance party and political rally. When Antibalas performed in Brooklyn's Williamsburg Park recently, trumpeter Jordan McLean dedicated the afrobeat big band's show to the performance-punk trio Pussy Riot (recently sentenced to prison in Russia for "hooliganism") as well as to "another pussy" — namely Igor, a recently deceased feline friend of the band.
