A Rare Misfire By The Arditti Quartet

DC10

This is a rare misfire by the Arditti Quartet, an ensemble of unbelievable virtuosity whose recordings are almost always impeccable. Their Carter is miraculous, their Webern sublime. This recording, however, pales in comparison to the Schoenberg cycles of the Kolisch Quartet, the Schoenberg Quartet, and the Lasalle Quartet. Perhaps Schoenberg isn't modern enough for the Ardittis' wheelhouse.

string-sound-transitions

who else today -after that examplary achievement of the lasalle-quartet for deutsche grammophon in early 1971- gives such an exquisit delightful performance of schoenberg's masterly strong modern quartet music than the arditti-musicians(with soprano upshaw). especially impressiv are the parts of 'litany'(deep is the sadness...)and 'transport'(feel the air of another planet...)as their overall somehow lightful grip of shaping rhythmic detail. lost in musical transition.
