The talented if underrated pianist Armen Donelian leads his high-quality sextet through a variety of complex originals (some of which have tricky time signatures), an obscurity and Billy Strayhorn’s “Chelsea Bridge.” The band sounds well rehearsed, the solos of Donelian, trumpeter Barry Danielian and Dick Oatts on tenor and soprano are purposeful, and the musicians make the music sound easier than it really is. This is stirring post bop music, unpredictable but swinging and logical in its own fashion. – Scott Yanow
