Cello Chanting Soulfully

richard.watson8

Like a minimal and meditative Elliot Smith? Which is not to say Russell sounds like anyone else. It took a couple of listens to appreciate, as it does with most great, timeless music (I swear the whole album is in one key). I'm definitely going to download another of his albums after I assimilate this one.

Seriously psychedelic and beautifully weird album. Spirit music.

An excellent, must-own album from a truly individual artist which I urge you to download now. Arthur Russell's music is a real joy to discover: try 'Wax The Van' on for size and I am sure you will be back for more. Avant-garde certainly, but warm and fuzzy with it.

UNDESCRIBABLY GOOD

RidgeBardo

Arthur Russell was an avant garde tour de force whose work was not well heard or appreciated until after his untimely death from AIDS in 1992. His style and execution are fairly unique and the songs deserve repeated listens, even when not initially apparent. The first track "Tone Bone Kone," contains one of the most catchy snippets of song I've ever heard, and lasts a total of 15 seconds. Appreciate the genius that Russell's music portended.

Who Is…Kindness

By Marissa G. Muller, Contributor

Though his music is a swirl of garish saxophones, slap bass, syrupy synths and the kind of sung-rap samples that last saw radio airplay in '83, Adam Bainbridge, who records as Kindness, isn't being ironic. He's just firmly committed to the idea that these elements make for the best-sounding dance music. The fizzy pleasures of "SEOD" and "That's Alright" from his debut album World, You Need a Change of Mind make it difficult to argue. Aside… more »

They Say All Music Guide

An incredible assemblage of solo versions of this influential and unique downtown musician. Arthur Russell’s World of Echo contains the songs and instrumentals written from 1980-1986: “Soon-To-Be Innocent Fun/Let’s See,” “Tower of Meaning/Rabbit’s Ear/Home Away from Home,” “Tone Bone Kone,” “Answers Me,” “Being It,” “Place I Know/Kid Like You,” “She’s the Star/I Take This Time,” “Tree House,” “See-Through,” “Hiding Your Present from You,” “Wax the Van,” “All-Boy All-Girl,” “Lucky Cloud,” and “Let’s Go Swimming.” Subtle, transcendental with gentle rock beats and new music influences in patternings and textures. – “Blue” Gene Tyranny
