I didn't get acquainted with Joseph Joachim Raff until I was 60, but his music immediately touched my heart, and the 7th is a favorite. It's a sunny, lyrical work with just enough touches of gravitas. It's deftly scored (a trademark) and wonderfully played and recorded here. If you like late Romantic orchestral works but shy away when they get too dense and lugubrious, you should enjoy Raff. And if you like the 7th at all, be sure to try out his acknowledged chef d'oeuvre, the 5th.
