The Charlie Christian-inspired guitarist provides an easy link to bebop on this superb straight-ahead offering from 1956. Kessel's driving lines are fresh and flowing on an odd assortment of numbers, including decidedly pre-bop fare like "Louisiana," "12th Street Rag" and "Indiana." But he interprets these old nuggets through a cool new perspective, accompanied by pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Red Mitchell, drummer Shelly Manne and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison. From start to finish, this one does indeed swing.
