Lean and not mean, this is it, the classic of late '80s indie "love rock."
Label: K Records / SC Distribution

The beat music that longs for the '60s before drugs, and love before wisdom, is nonetheless radical — for their amped-up second album, Beat Happening take the Replacements 'line about music having too many notes literally. The absence of bass ingeniously emphasizes a powerful floor tom while the guitar distortion clears the head for straight talk and suggestive nonsense. Calvin's voice looms like a rockabilly ghoul, while Heather's skips rope. His "Indian Summer" became the oft-covered classic, but her "In Between" was the key song — a kind of bed-bouncing, punk rock house music for the subconscious. Only Public Enemy presented as great a challenge in 1988, or stands up so well.

The Only Coffee Shop In Bismarck, ND

blackemperor

Sometime in the early nineties I saw BH at a coffee shop in Bismarck, ND. Probably the best thing that could've Happened to me and Bismarck for that matter. I bought this cassette tape at the show, which changed my music tastes forever. Thanks emusic for reviving my youth!

Crashing Through

ChicagoAtlas

Maybe I'm just parital because this was my first BH record. Form when I first put it on the turntable it's raw energy blew me away. Hangman is forgetable but all of the rest are top DIY punk/pop/folk. A good place to start and their most soild album.

So this is where grunge came from?

ElectroJosh

This album is as educational as it is pleasant to listen to. Songs on "Jamboree" are almost folk-like in their ease, but are more than hardcore enough to draw in the most cynical listener. Early elements of grunge and post-punk are strongly evident here--so much so that I suggest that this album represents a turning point in the modern history of rock and roll.

Who Are…Eternal Summers

By Lindsay Zoladz, eMusic Contributor

When I get the two founding members of Virginia power-poppers Eternal Summers on the phone, they're living up to their name. Drummer and occasional vocalist Daniel Cundiff is house-sitting for a friend in rural Roanoke, recovering from the band's just-wrapped East Coast tour by "hanging out, watching movies" and — the leisurely activity he's engaged in during our interview — playing fetch with his friend's dog in the backyard ("Ahh, sorry, there are some ants… more »

It’s a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod World

By Tobi Vail, eMusic Contributor

When I was 16, Calvin Johnson (K Records) asked me to drum for Beat Happening on their upcoming U.K.tour. I asked my parents if it was OK for me to drop out of high school and go on tour. My dad said it was, under one condition: I had to prove that I could support myself. He arranged for me to stay with my grandparents, where I did piecework in a cucumber field owned by… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Co-produced by Steve Fisk and the Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan and Gary Lee Conner, Beat Happening’s brief, brilliant sophomore effort significantly expands the trio’s horizons without sacrificing any of their naïve charm. Sporting a fuller, more intricate sound and stronger songs than their debut, Jamboree crystallizes the trio’s love-rock aesthetic in its embryonic stages; veering sharply from the idyllic drones of the perennial “Indian Summer” to the poignant crush-pop of “Cat Walk” to the indie-party classic “Midnight a Go-Go,” each cut is a marvel of innocence and ingenuity. – Jason Ankeny
