His finest and most focused effort to date
2012 | Label: The Noise Company

Along with the critical cheers for singer-songwriter Ben Kweller, there’s also been some scattered murmuring that this Frisco kid hasn’t quite lived up to his hype. That, instead of having found his voice, Kweller had found too many voices: whiny Neil, anxious Kurt, wobbly Garcia. No more. Go Fly a Kite is his finest and most focused effort to date.

Ironically, commercial failure’s been good for Kweller’s self-esteem. The rocker, “Mean To Me,” sports a commanding guitar hook and the lines, “Gotta scream at the top of your lungs/Just to get ‘em what you want ‘em to hear.” Country-ish “Out the Door” is another winner, powered by forceful acoustic strumming. The ballad “The Rainbow,” mates Sticky Fingers-era Stones with Beach Boys harmonies.

Kweller started his own label to release this disc. Judging from this high-flying Kite, he’s both an excellent employee and a helluva boss.

Great talent; great guy; his greatest work to date

The sort of artist it is not only easy to love, but easy to root for - a great songwriter, and a really friendly guy - and I agree with the review by Peter Gerstenzang; I think this is his best album and the quickest at getting into your head. I once read an article that said something like "...if our's was a fair world that really rewarded talent, Paul Westerberg would be a billionaire..."; I feel the same way about BK

Another stellar release from BK, and there's not a bad song in the bunch. My favorites are: "Free", "Full Circle" and "You Can Count on Me". The album is more country leaning in the vein of "Changing Horses", but with some rocking numbers and plenty of witty and poignant lyrics. If you like BK (or music), buy this now! I pre-ordered from BK directly and got an autographed copy. A class act all the way.

A Field Report from the New Country

By Lenny Kaye, eMusic Contributor

Whither country music - or will it wither? Most of the c&w on strut at the recent CMA awards had more to do with 80's power-rock and 00's teen-pop than the morning farm report. In recent years, an alt-country movement in such Willy-billy suburbs as Brooklyn's Williamsburg has waved a country flag, along with a taste for trucker's caps and Pabst Blue Ribbon. This isn't a sudden outcropping on the range; ever since Gram Parsons… more »
