An calm and sublime album
Bic Runga's influences show through here on this timeless collection of fine tracks. The Carpenters' silkiest moments spring to mind with gentle rhythms and tempo pulling you along. Her voice and enunciation seem to fall between the fun and lift of Singaporean songstress, Tanya Chua and the overt sexiness of Sarah Nixey's Sing, Memory. The ethereal timelessness of the album is one of its strongest assets: The songs could have been written any time between yesterday and the 70s. There are parts, for example, that might have been influenced by the Moody Blues, Kate Bush, Edwin Collins or Sheryl Crow. This is not to say that the album is derivative in any way. It is Bic Runga and could be no other's. A couple of listens and there is no mistaking Bic's succulent tones and smooth rhythms that are as unique as the lady herself. All in all, then, not a challenging or offbeat masterpiece, but rather a very satisfying and easy listen.
