Adventures in Serenity
The second disk by the Australian pianist-composer has many moments that take one out of the everyday. From the gospel style of "Seek and You Will Find" to the driving funk of "Let Me Off" to the tolling chords of "A Gift", Risby and the rhythm section rarely display technique - instead, this is a program of melodic invention with solos that grow organically from the themes. "I'll Be Seeing You" is both melancholy and uplifting, so pretty one never wants the piece to stop. One can hear influences of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, perhaps Paul Bley, but don't waste time trying to hear other pianists. Just enjoy these musical meditations.
