Sassy, Sultry, Subtle, Simply Irresistible

This album is simply amazing. I love it straight through, from beginning to end. Absolutely my #1 played album right now. "Don't forget to Breathe" is mixed perfection, a-la Thievery Corporation. "Mating Game" is fun and suggestive, and I have to force myself not to hit repeat. "Overdue" is sassy, and playful. The sexy giggle at the end of the track puts a smile on my face every single time. This is a GREAT album. Download in it's entirety.

Hypnotic

scooter2005

In my opinion this is a cool album. I like the singer's sultry, hypnotic, and suggestive tone. I think it's sounds quite a bit like Jem or Plumb. Great listen and worth the download.

Sinfully seductive sounds!

Mix Portishead and Nancy Sinatra in a blender and pour it into a digital martini glass and you've got The Mating Game. It's 1966, go-go boots and trippy beats rolled into one!

Fun

eJDL

A flirty, sexy, fun first effort. Really enjoyed this - played it for weeks. Won't put you to sleep like Zero 7, or Bliss, and won't bore you like Morecheeba.

Nice fluff

The singer's voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Martina Topley-Bird, and the overall production - ambient vinyl pops, soft-synth jazz stylings - is not dissimilar from Martina's first (best) solo album, though tidied up and rendered a bit more radio-friendly. It's entirely decent though lacking the extra measure of soul that would make it essential. No rating system on offer for some reason, but I'd give it a solid 3 stars.

Some of the best trip-hop I've heard

EASILYignored

Portishead style trip-hop. I only downloaded the up-tempo songs (1, 2, 3, 5 and 8). Sounds great, but I doubt the slower songs would float my boat. The stand out track was Dirty Laundry.

Hot Hot Hot!

erinraediant

Totally fun and worth the download if you like ethnic-electro-jazz with hot, catchy vocals and hooks. I know I've been caught more than once singing "Dirty Laundry" while in traffic. I swear you'll be singing along in no time!

They Say All Music Guide

The label says that the debut album from Bitter:Sweet (a duo featuring Supreme Being of Leisure Kiran Shahani and singer Shana Halligan) will appeal to fans of Serge Gainsbourg, Portishead, and Everything But the Girl. Hold up. How does that work again? Well, as it turns out, the album won’t necessary appeal to all of those people all at the same time — the Gainsbourg fans will get a kick out of the loungey, horn-heavy “Mating Game” (and is that a theremin heard warbling in the background?), while those who got excited when Everything But the Girl got all jungley and electro will love the juxtaposition of cool, breathy vocals and jumpy breakbeats on “Our Remains” and “Salty Air.” For the Portishead contingent there’s the spare and sulky funk of “Overdue” and the turntable-infused junglism of “Don’t Forget to Breathe” (which also features really nice strings and a fun rhythmic changeup in the chorus). It all adds up to an album that captivates not by virtue of real originality, but by combining familiar elements in consistently enjoyable ways. – Rick Anderson
