Texas Velvets? Awesome indeed!

EMUSIC-009B798F

Truly an enjoyable listen. Wish they kept cranking them out. All of Black Lipstick's releases are worth getting but this is my favorite.

Awesome

leamancrews

On their label's website, Black Lipstick was described as Modern Velvet Underground Lover Feelies on acid, or something to that effect. Simply put, if you dig the Velvets and their indie heritage, you'll probably love Black Lipstick. As a side note, the track listed above as "Periods" should actually be "...", as it is listed on the CD case. Myself, I call the song "October Without You." Much better title than "Periods." :-)

Where to start

Haddabyte

Anyone new to Black Lipstick would be wise to start at the Kiss Offs and then on to the first Black Lipstick EP. The EP more or less defines "shoegazing". I may be the only person in Philly who owns a Black Lipstick t-shirt but I love this band....

Grandma Airplane track is incredible

fareed

solely on the basis of "Grandma Airplane" i've decided to download the entire album.. The track is sweet and reminds me of Mercury Rev back in the nineties when they were awesome.. but without the distortion production values.. the next track is "Throw Some Money At It" and I sure will..

revival of a velvets massacre

Daviso

Everytime I spin this, i love it even more. It's the raw 2000 version of Lou Reed with some sensibilities of the brian jonestown massacre. Start with 'Grandma Airplane' and work your way in. don't let the fake stones like the strokes let you ignore the real groove thing happen' here. | djspork.libsyn.com | -cheers.

They Say All Music Guide

Continuing their blend of sweet indie pop tunes and off-kilter dynamic shifts, the third album by Austin quartet Black Lipstick is their best yet, featuring a solid collection of songs led off by the outstanding fuzz-pop of “B.O.B. F.O.S.S.E.,” which has the implacable throb of a classic Flying Nun single from the ’80s. Elsewhere, the epic trance-outs “Grandma Airplane” and “All Night Long Forever” recall the Hoboken scene of prime Feelies, Antietam, and early Yo La Tengo, and on the careening “No Mercy,” the group finally succumbs to the temptation to outright pay tribute to the early Velvet Underground, right down to a one-chord piano part straight out of “White Light, White Heat.” In other words, there’s little on Sincerely, Black Lipstick that hasn’t been done before, but the group does it with such obvious affection for the style that it doesn’t feel simply derivative. – Stewart Mason
