Scanning the Spectrum of Dubstep

Sobriquet

While the album itself is excellent from beginning to end, the songs Rusty Break and Foxy stand out immediately. If you're looking for just a couple songs with some great beats and re-listenability, grab those.

This album has the same originality that Burial's have, but in a completely different style. It would be stupid to compare the two artists because they work at very different ends of the spectrum of the dubstep genre. Burial's music is some deep introspective shit. This more spritely and bright but is just as 'good'. Download whether you liked Burial or not.

Lovely beats, and great songs, but a bit too soft.

There are a good number of tracks on this album and some great development, but overall, it's got a more soft, dubby and spaced out drum'n'bass flow than the first record. The title track is by far the best song, and had the whole album pursued this flow and mood, I'd be more inclined to give it 5 stars like Oneiric. Instead it meanders toward a more dubby sound that takes some of the energy out of the record. There are most definitely still highlights, the first four tracks, as well as Foxy and Fieldtrip, but the rest either almost seem like copies from Oneiric (Chiral reminds me of Grub), or somewhat boring odd jobs, like Lunal or Bloscid. Still, the genre defying sound and deft drum programming makes up for a lot, and while a bit less energetic and somewhat derivative of his debut, it's better than anything else on the Mu roster at the moment, and that is saying A LOT.

amazing. download first, think later.

Boxcutters music may be considered in the broad sense as dubstep, but in reality, its truely unclassfiable. This album was definately one of the best albums to come out in 2007, and, in my opinion trumps Burial's 2007 release (though also an exceptional album). Glyphic spans genres, taking the best qualities from IDM, 2step/garage, dub and electronica to result in some of the freshest sounding music I've heard in a long time. Standout tracks are 'bloscid' (think a doped up aphex twin) and 'foxy' (up-beat, garage/2step influence). I listen to this album almost every day and still haven't gotten sick of it. Do yourself a favour check it out.

100x better than Burial

clive_bunker

It's not really about 'getting' Burial it's about 'not getting' the genre IMO. Boxcutter is 100x the producer that Burial is, and this album is a great representation of his skills. They really shouldn't even be compared, Burial is not in the same league and is only popular because of the hype. But don't take my word for it, listen for yourself.

For those who don't get Burial

fnordian

I tried. I really tried to like Burial, but I guess I just don't "get" it. But this is the dubstep that to me is worth the fuss. Plop in the earbuds and enjoy!

Another classic!

SCHEMA

This one will be misleadingly filed under 'Dubstep', even though there are only a few tracks with Dub and 2 step beats, most of this album is based around the 'Breaks' akin to the likes of 'Four Tet' and 'Amon Tobin' with a blend of classic electronic IDM styling of Planet Mu's boss ยต-Ziq. All in all, you have one of the most essential electronica albums of 2007!

Rusty Break

I just had my mind blown by 'Rusty Break'. I only hope the rest of the album is like this.
