Braid, Frame & Canvas
2003 | Label: Polyvinyl Records

If Braid hadn't split in 1999, there's no telling the millions they would be counting in the mainstremo era. Frame and Canvas is a near-perfect distillation of late-'90s emo, a mass of fist pumps, slow kisses and deep sighs. "Never Will Come For Us," in which Chris Broach and Bob Nanna trade heart-sick barbs, and "A Dozen Roses," a too-fast ballad (or too-slow rave-up) about — what else? — rejection set to a Polaroid-perfect guitar… read more »

I like it!

Thanks again to eMusic for once again introducing me to music that I may not ever heard. As an "editors pick" I gave it a listen and really liked every track. I will be being this album and expect to enjoy it over and over.

Top 5

This has and will most likely always be in my Top 5 records of all time.. I own it on CD and LP, and can listen to it any time for any reason.. 1, 2, & 4 are good intros, I think, and 3, 7, 9, 10, and 12 are nice follow-ups.. also check out Hey Mercedes for a little more power-pop sound, and Braid's Age of Octeen or Movie Music for a little edgier sound.

A brilliant work. A must listen for fans of the genre, as this album helped define it. Try track 1. You'll get hooked.

kick ass, as it were

A Dozen Roses is a killer, but the whole album is a great piece of work. Very cohesive, as opposed to being a few good songs.

They Say All Music Guide

These poppy math rock and emo veterans put together very technical pop melodies, often with time changes and beautiful interlocking melodic guitar parts, fused together with yelled/sung boyish vocals. Frame & Canvas proves to be one of Braid’s best efforts — by the end of the first song, “The New Nathan Detroits,” you know you will be humming these melodies in your head for at least the next few days. The album continues to mature throughout, providing a sense of heartbreak and sentimentality on amazing tracks like “A Dozen Roses” and “Breathe In.” If you are looking for emo-pop with overflowing energy and highly skilled compositions, this is for you. – Blake Butler
