The power-pop half of the Raconteurs offers more merry melodies
Label: ATO Records

Oh to be a Raconteur. Not Jack White, of course; people love Generation Y's greatest guitar hero so much they're willing to watch him indulge his drummer boy fantasies in the Dead Weather. No, we're referring to the supergroup's other main songwriter — Brendan Benson, a.k.a. the pristine power-pop antidote to White's grimy garage rock tendencies. Believe it or not, Benson had a healthy solo career before Broken Boy Soldiers, one that reaches way back to the mid-'90s. Some people have even gone so far as to say that he's today's answer to Big Star and Matthew Sweet, a comparison Benson appreciates but doesn't totally agree with.

Which is understandable. Top-heavy hooks aside, there's more to Benson's fourth full-length than merry melodies and inescapable choruses. "Feel Like Taking You Home," for one, sounds like a back alley tour of the singer's subconscious, as he rides a subdued disco-punk groove off into the sunrise. There are richly-orchestrated tracks that pay tribute to Motown ("Garbage Day") and wrap Benson's sad sack vocals in sweeping strings ("You Make a Fool Out of Me"). As for the album's certified jam quotient, it's up there, from the raucous organ rolls and brain-burrowing refrains of… read more »

Like an ELO album that almost was

searles.mike

Lush production and sunny melodies, coke-binge paranoia and Moliere-like naivete... this is a great, grand, yet personal record. Enjoy it - my favorite tracks are the first 4 tracks

one of my recent favorites

If you like simple but good straight ahead rock, get this album. It has a very 90s feel to it.

Melodic guitar goodness.

Brendan Benson is back! After his journey into the overpowering Kingdom of Jack White, Brendan returns to recording solo - a very welcome treat, if you ask me. This one is full of hooks that refuse to let you go, great pop riffs, soaring vocals...all the things we've come to expect from Mr. Benson. Welcome back, Brendan!

Solid.

FourEyedPoppy

This is no One Mississippi. It is slick and filled out and very produced, like BB all grown up. I like it, and you know it's Brendan by the rhyming lyrics. It's growing on me daily, definitely a 5 star pick.

Again and again

You can always trust that a Brnedon Benson CD will give you music that will challange you and you'll enjoy most of it. Face it though...if you wanted to hear the same thing over and over you'd download something less satisfying than this music.

Fun listening

ddogart

Pop with very rhythmic beats. Easy, high-energy tunes. Great to have playing while doing manual work.

More greatness from Brendan

Bags

He is a power pop master. Tight, hummable songs that can't be denied. Personally I think he rocks in the best way on his own, not in the Raconteurs. You can even start with this album if you're new to B.B. solo work.

Well-executed pop!

Forget JB, I've been watching this guy since Lapalco. He's is so very talented in his own right...why would Jack have pulled him in, in the first place? Anyone who can't feel this music must be tone deaf.

Nothing there

Drewski

This (to me) is a big let down compared to his other stuff. Oh well.

Nothing wrong with a great pop song

They Say All Music Guide

My Old, Familiar Friend is Brendan Benson’s first album since becoming Jack White’s lieutenant in the Raconteurs but the group’s raucous classicist guitar rock isn’t much heard on this, Benson’s fourth collection of precisely practiced pop. If anything, the higher profile he’s received as part of the Raconteurs has offered Benson the opportunity to ratchet up his perfectionism and indulge in a bit of retro fantasia, allowing him to pair the bright, neo-Motown of “Garbage Day” with “Gonowhere,” a rather brilliant pastiche of prime Wings. All the extra time and budget on My Old, Familiar Friend do result in a record where it’s easier to admire Benson’s reach and skill, even if his power pop isn’t quite as powerful, something that’s evident when the music is at its liveliest, as on the opener “Eyes on the Horizon” or the cheerful, not entirely ironic breakup stomp “Don’t Wanna Talk.” Such is the trade-off of working on a grander scale: the ambitions are realized at the expense of energy. Fortunately for Benson, his taste and melodic skills are suited for this bigger scale, so My Old, Familiar Friend winds up as an effective showcase for his craftsmanship. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
