A sublime, sad reminder of a remarkable talent lost
2013 | Label: Warp Records

When it came to soundtracking Peter Strickland’s horror film Berberian Sound Studio, about a British sound engineer working for an Italian film company in the 1970s, there could have been no other name on the list than Broadcast. The band, aka Trish Keenan and James Cargill, were recording this album when Keenan died from pneumonia in 2011, age just 42, and it is a sublime, sad reminder of a remarkable talent lost. On their own albums, the pair’s haunting songs are constructed from elements that evoke half-remembered television themes, or a ghostly folk group transmitting from the future. It’s rare that a soundtrack album constructed from fragments of music and snatches of dialogue is a rewarding listen, but Broadcast — perhaps because they are so adept at creating otherworldly sounds from pop’s detritus — managed it beautifully here. Some of the tracks are genuinely unnerving, such as “Mark Of The Devil,” its mean electronic pulses and chants sounding like wraiths in charge of a power station, or the guttural gabbling of “A Goblin.” These terrifying moments are contrasted with pastoral instrumentals, built largely from flute, xylophone and organ, which could soundtrack a cold, misty morning as well as the original… read more »

Is it a song or soundscape?

NAPALMSTAR

Re price structure,Brian Eno,Neroli Cost me 79 pence for 57 minutes = 1 track on itunes, now its £7.99. Perhaps the artist needs to clarify the terms of the download price so perhaps 3 or more shorter tracks could be mixed together without too much effort without comprimising the soundscape. As for the music judging from the samples it,s something I would have downloaded.

oh what the f... the music is great,oh what the f...k the price. that's the rules,0.49 e for un song around an half hour, the same price for 1/2 minute. perhaps creat for this singular case, big compilation,a system like for somes album, only 25 cts each song with the full album, keep on thinking, and love music!

Hello from Canada

blatanville

The full album, all 39:52 of it, would cost me $19.11 in credits to download. I can buy the CD and cover 1/2 my transit, or all of my parking costs, for that price. Should I consider this the "down" side of being able to download an entire 60 minute, 1-track album for 1 credit? Should I suck it up and give emusic back 39 credits to download? I think I'll wait until I can find the CD at a used store...

Broadcast - Berberian Sound Studio

Come on, eMusic! You cannot charge 19,11 € for this album when half of the tracks are around 40 seconds long! It's far cheaper to buy this on CD or vinyl (with free MP3 download inside). You should do something about it...

I also think this is a shame and hasn't been thought through properly. An albu that lasts less than 40 mins and isn't an import or a rarity does not warrent that price. Is there a solution to this as I would have liked to download this as well but not at that price.

Once again, eMusic actively discourages listeners from downloading excellent albums with their ridiculous, ill-conceived, one-size-fits-all pricing policy. When will they pull their grubby fingers out and do something about it?!

Such a shame Emusic is selling this album as individual tracks, meaning that the download cost for a 37 minute album is more than four times that of a typical album download. Only the most devoted Broadcast fan is likely to use their whole monthly allowance to get this album, so it won't get the attention it deserves.

Who Is…Carmen Villain

By Amre Klimchak, eMusic Contributor

Though modeling might sound like a dream job to some, Carmen Hillestad looked the part in front of the camera, but was all the while dreaming of another fantasy occupation. Music was always on her mind, beckoning her to abandon the silence of magazine shoots and finally unveil the songs that had been incubating in secret for six or seven years. Her earliest musical endeavors involved classical piano and clarinet lessons but upon falling in love… more »
