Edwardian splendours

hairybaroque

This is a very handy album; it has nearly all Vaughan Williams' early works for orchestra all in one package, nicely played and full of nostalgia. It's amazing to remember that VW actually collected the folk tunes, from which most of these pieces derive, from living English people who still worked every day with their hands (and horses) on the land. Thank God he got in there when he did - folk song club recreations aren't quite the same…

A great introduction to Vaughan-Williams

Some true Vaughan-Williams favourites here, the sublime Tallis Fantasia, the quintessential Lark Ascending and the oft-overlooked Dives and Lazarus. It only needs the English Folksong Suite to be a COMPLETE introductory album.
