Harsh album cover, but great music

A steal at 12 credits. I picked this up back in the day, expecting something more like Dead Kennedys HC, but this was a lot freaker. The Shah Sleeps ... is just an amazing freakout. Many of the songs really are reminiscent of a bad trip, Gibby's vocals kind of made me think of HR Puffinstuff on a bad trip. But in the end, there's a time to live and a time to die. I smoke Elvis Presley's toenails when I want to get high.

I'm freaking out

You must have this record if you like the BH Surfers at all. 'Hey' is worth the price all by itself. A crazy scary band in a crazy scary time and also so much fun. Only the Minutemen, or perhaps Scratch Acid, could compare.

Godlike

alleyway

The Butthole Surfers' first EP was a message from the universe that I wasn't alone. It rocks hard. It digs down deep into the base of your skull and says "welcome home". When I expressed total love for this band my roommates thought I was nuts and my girlfriend almost left me, but I knew I had found something really f&^cking good. Get this one and listen to it loudly.

They Say All Music Guide

“There’s a time to live and a time to die/I smoke Elvis Presley’s toenails when I want to get high.” So begins the Butthole Surfers’s eponymous 1983 EP, repackaged on Butthole Surfers/Live PCPPEP with its live 1984 follow-up. The line, together with the caustic, hellacious instrumentation of “The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey’s Grave,” accurately sums up the band’s bizarre, hilarious, and ultimately intellectual shlock-core. And since the Buttholes launched their 20-year voyage down the crazy river with these EPs, they’re essential listening for fans. Besides the entire live EP, the set includes a second previously unreleased encore, “Sinister Crayon” (recorded for the first EP), and a demo version of “Something.” – Johnny Loftus
