excellent 80s guitar rock

Can't say much that hasn't already been said here . . . so glad to find this available on emusic as my cassette was worn out. For the time, very edgy use of guitars, at times pushing beyond the obvious influences like U2.

Lost Classic of the 80s

Great atmospheric guitars and some very good songwriting. Too bad they did not make much more music, but I am glad for this re-release with some extra tracks that were not on my original CASSETTE!

Must have

This was among my first CDs, one of the best albums of the 80ies. I am happy now for the bonus tracks here!

Been a long time

Brings back memories of happy times freezing my B******s off in a damp old flat listening to great music. Been after this one for years as my mate used to have it on vinyl. They should have been far more recognised up there with other such greats as the Chameleons.

Brilliant 80s alternative rock

Mlo

I remember buying this on cassette years ago with the money from my first job. I never thought I'd see it to download. Absolutely brialliant guitar rock. My favourites are the Bridge and Worlds apart, but there isn't a bad track here. A real pity they never made it big.

I had this on vinyl and also have been longing to have it on CD or MP3. I love this record. Cactus World News never seem to catch on in the USA. I do remember a episode of Miami Vice that had one of there songs in it. They had a unique guitar driven sound that even fellow Irish rockers U2 and The Alarm did not have. Worlds Apart is my favotite but all of them are great. My life is fulfilled now ; )

Ahoooh!!

Yet another piece of vinyl that I thought would never get onto the iPod! Solid, undated, 80's rock from an Irish band following in the footsteps of Big Country (who, of course, were not an Irish band). Or maybe it's Stiff Little Fingers. Anyway, the "hit" single and best song is Years Later, but there're lots of other good ones (Worlds Apart springs to mind). Have a listen, use some downloads.

They Say All Music Guide

Cactus World News wastes no time in making a first impression on its debut album Urban Beaches. The opening track “Worlds Apart” explodes from the speakers with screeching, reverberating guitars, tumbling drums, and fervent vocals. The anthemic chorus and breathtaking energy of “Worlds Apart” will remind listeners of U2′s “I Will Follow” in its feel and execution. However, despite similarities to the music of fellow Irish band U2, Urban Beaches is a smart, hypnotically melodic album bristling with youthful exuberance and sparkling musicianship. The impassioned singing of Eoin McEvoy on “Worlds Apart,” “In a Whirlpool,” “The Promise,” and “The Bridge” is contagious; after hearing him bellow “Worlds apart, worlds apart/Closer than I’ve ever been/To you” a few times, listeners will find themselves mouthing the words or perhaps singing it in the shower. Frank Kearns’ driving, electrifying riffs magnify the urgency in McEvoy’s voice; nearly every track has thrilling, dramatic guitar playing. Urban Beaches should’ve been a hit in the U.S.; instead, it became a buried treasure in the cutout bins. – Michael Sutton
