One of the most arresting openings to a symphony you'll ever hear.
2003 | Label: haenssler CLASSIC

I clearly remember my sister, eight or nine at the time, dragged to one of my school orchestra concerts and, at its conclusion, telling me she liked this piece best. The brusque gesture that launches Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony (1876) is definitely one of the more arresting openings: glowering, passionate and Russian, Russian, Russian. Compare it to the sinuous oboe melody that comes later, and you hear the two sides of Borodin's musical personality: barbaric vs. sensuous, both tinged with the exotic folk colors of ancient Asian tribes. This disc is also the only one I know that offers father-son performances of the same work, by Erich (1890-1956) and Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004).

Carlos Kleiber fans rejoice

bplonline

Once again, the joie de vivre of Carlos Kleiber brings a beloved yet problematic work to life! I have heard great conductors (including Kleiber the senior) miss the vitality and life in this work. C. K. hits it on the head. I AM an ADVANCED CLASSICAL fan (see below) and I agree with Bidermaier, unless you are an E.K. fan, stick with the first 4 tracks.

Carlos's recording comes first - it's from 1972. Then Erich's, which was made in 1947.

Dont buy the last 4 tracks!!!

Bidermaier

I dont really know much about this kind of music. But there is something I can tell you. The symphony is duplicated. There are two version of the same one. This might be interesting for advanced classic music enthusiats but I would not recommend to download the whole albut to them because the second interpretation of the symphony sounds very bad. It is AM radio quality.

Classical for Beginners

By Gavin Borchert, eMusic Contributor

Now and then, people ask me for advice on where to begin with the daunting world of classical music recordings. They've heard bits here and there, they're curious, they imagine they'd probably enjoy it once they got involved, but they wouldn't know where to look if they walked into -- oops, I mean logged onto eMusic.com and started poking around. My strategy is always to offer a handful of suggestions, in as wide a variety… more »
