Ceramic Dog, Your Turn
2013 | Label: Northern Spy Records / Redeye

“We have a new business model, we’ll blow you for a nickel.” This is the acidic guitarist Marc Ribot, summing up the effect that the internet has had on the value of recorded music, in one pithy quote. Ribot, who played with Tom Waits just as the singer was morphing from hobo crooner to glass-spitting carnie barker, has never been afraid of sharp edges, and has made his career since his Waits days in the avant-garde circuit. But Your Turn is a veer back into rock-song territory, albeit rock songs with big crayon doodles all over them: Title track “Your Turn” is a driving motorik groove defaced with a sloppy guitar solo that could be a Shreds video.

Solid Return for Ceramic Dog

silverskid

Marc Ribot's power trio are back with a follow up to 2008's excellent Party Intellectuals. As energetic as that album is, this one is a bit more rocking and in your face, all in Ribot's musically refined way. For those who don't know, Ribot is an A-list session guitarist who has played with everyone from Elvis Costello to his downtown cohorts such as John Zorn. He has also been turning out experimental solo albums for years. This album rocks out in a way that blends the nasty attitude of noisy garage rock with the virtuosity associated with Ribot , Shazad Ismailly , and Ches Smith-- all seasoned and creative players. Standouts include Lies My Body Told Me, Bread and Roses, a re-worked version of Take 5, the angry Masters of the Internet the scathing instrumental, Ritual Slaughter. Solid and innovative work.
