Charlie Rich, The Complete Sun Singles
Label: Sun Records

If you know Charlie Rich only as the countrypolitan crooner of the '70s ("Behind Closed Doors," "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World"), you're in for a big surprise. With his jazz background, Charlie was a sophisticated pianist who didn't let that keep him from rocking, and his country-soul voice was one of a kind; he was also a peerless arranger and a knowing songwriter. Even Sam Phillips himself said that Rich was the most complete musician he had at Sun, and though Charlie only scored one hit single (the teen-swing cry "Lonely Weekends"), there's nothing here to suggest Sam's evaluation was off-base. Originally a session musician and staff writer, Charlie was at best a reluctant performer. I was surprised to take a gander with this album. There are some rare cuts that are not the traditional Charlie Rich songs. Take a chance and listen, you will more than likely add several to ur collection

This guy has a great Elvis style of singing. Good songs, too....from the sounds of these singles, Charlie was sort of a sonic chameleon for Sun Records, there is a lot of stylistic variation between the different tracks on this. The man was versatile, but you may wanna just find the coolest songs.

underrated artist

Charlie Rich was an amazing, almost too talented artist. His best work was done for Smash Records in the mid 60's; these early sides, however, are quite fine as well, and should be counted among the best to come out of the legendary Sun Records.

Sun Records

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

Is there a more fabled label in all of rock 'n 'roll than Sun Records of Memphis, where Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich got their starts? Alabama native Sam Phillips, a white man with an ear for black music in particular and a heart for black culture in general, opened the custom Memphis Recording Service in 1950, but by that summer was cutting commercial records for… more »
