They Say All Music Guide

This punk rock is a lot more poppy than the name and dogmatic baggage would indicate, replete with goofy covers from the Monkees, “We Got the Beat,” and occasional crossovers into the metallic realm à la D.R.I. But when you consider that The Doughnut and Bourbon Years is a remastered and reissued version of Spread Your Filth, which was originally recorded in 1987 (and released the following year), none of this is too surprising. It was a different time back then, and though this does seem a bit dated owing to that very fact, it’s a spirited relic from a time when underground punk was caught between identities. – Brian O’Neill
