A Joy

Recordings of the music of Sir Arthur Bliss are few and far between, although I understand a new recording of the Blow Meditations is awaiting release. If you want to explore 20th Century British music beyond Britten and Vaughan Williams, here's a good place to start, along with the 5th Symphony of Edmund Rubbra and the Boult recordings of Moeran's Symphony. The 1966 CBSO under Hugo Rignold may lack the polish it later acquired under Simon Rattle but these are committed, enthusiastic performances recorded in the sound for which Lyrita became famous. The Prayer is from a later (1975) recording session. Get it and then look for the Charles Groves recordings of the Colour Symphony and "Things to Come" Suite.
