A Bargain With A Catch

Palomino-Royalle

On the whole, I'm very satisfied with this set. The recordings sound very good, I think, and they come at a bargain price. It's a great way to explore Debussy's wonderfully inventive orchestrations. However, I have one complaint: Whoever put this package together did an amazingly shoddy job of sequencing the tracks. For example, the first 5 parts of Children's Corner are on tracks 16-20, but then two *other pieces* totaling almost 27 minutes are inserted in tracks 21-22, and Children's Corner finally concludes with track 23. Why? Even worse, look at tracks 28-30; the three parts of Fantasy for Piano & Orchestra are presented in *reverse order*. Whoever is responsible should be sacked. I don't think that person is an eMusic employee, however. This album is also available at Amazon and the same sloppy sequencing is found there. One difference at Amazon is that they list the orchestras in the recordings, and they (according to Amazon) are *not* Jean Martinon and ORTF.

Complete Debussy Orchestral and Chamber Works

FSM

As the review below says, the performance appears to be that of Jean Martinon and the ORTF. Track timings correspond pretty much exactly to those of Martinon. One difference, there is an additional track, Clair de Lune, not in Martinon's set. The performance is first rate.

Debussy Bargain 44 for 12

dthom146

This looks similar to an old boxset put out by EMI "Debusssy: Orchestral Works by JEAN MARTINON conducting THE ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE L'O.R.T.F.(1974 UK black & white stamp stereo 5-LP box set. Works: Berceuse Heroique; La Boite A Joujoux (Children's Ballet); Children's Corner; Danses Sacree & Profane; Fantaisie For Piano & Orchestra with Aldo Ciccolini; Images; Jeux; Khamma; Marche Ecossaise; La Mer; Nocturnes; Petite Suite; La Plus Que Lente; Prelude A L'Apres-Midi D'un Faune; Printemps; Rhapsodie For Clarinet with Guy Dangain; Rhapsodie For Saxophone with Jean-Marie Londeix; Le Roi Lear; Tarentelle Styrienne." The only difference apart from the skewed order in this 'best of' is the inclusion of a piano version of Clair De Lune??? Apparently EMI licensed some of their old catalogue to BrilliantClassics, maybe it found its way here from this source??? Can anyone confirm this?

Sonorous and Sensuous: Spanish Classical Music

By Justin Davidson, eMusic Contributor

A century ago, if you wanted to locate the pulsating center of Spanish classical music, the spot where the seguidilla met the sonata - if you wished to meet Spain's most fertile and sophisticated musical minds - you would probably have headed for Paris. Specifically, you would have made your way to 269, rue Saint Jacques, by the Luxembourg Gardens and the Sorbonne, where, in a converted Benedictine convent, a rebel music school had recently… more »
