A blast, in every sense of the word
2012 | Label: Carpark Records

For the last few years, 20-year-old Cleveland native Dylan Baldi has been recording a steady torrent of endearing lo-fi pop contagions. Released under the name Cloud Nothings, Baldi’s songs are so simply constructed, so innately hooky, they almost sound easy: His 2010 compilation Turning On was a happy murk of lint-covered guitars, three-floors-below drums, and vocals so crackly, they could have been sampled off a ham-radio. Last year’s self-titled follow-up was crisper and snappier, bounding… read more »

Attack on Memory

Love this album. I play it a couple of times a week -- like the mood and feel. Wasted Days, No Future/No Past, and Separation are excellent. A lot better than Sabadoh's last offering. I looking forward to the new disc that's coming out on April 1st

I agree with FATHERPRESIDENT's review. That being said, I do like it.

It's...okay. Some of the songs are cool, and the record sounds good (thanks Steve!). The record has a nice feel to it overall; dark in places and pretty catchy in others. It's heavy too. The dynamics are good overall and some of the sounds are interesting. My criticism is that the songs themselves are just not the most interesting, and the lyrics are pretty crap. But this is a 20 year old guy, so perhaps he'll improve. I do think the record is getting way too much hype for something that is essentially a Wipers/Jesus Lizard kind of hybrid.

2012 Breakthrough: Cloud Nothings

By Brian Raftery, Contributor

[Although he had already released two full-lengths as Cloud Nothings, neither of them offered even the slightest hint of the full-bore raging-guitar panic attack that Dylan Baldi would unleash on Attack on Memory. Recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago, the record was a '90s-emo fever dream, howling guitars stumbling over toppling percussion and a freaked-out Baldi shredding his vocal chords at the top of the pile. eMusic's Brian Raftery talked with Baldi in January about… more »

New This Week: Cloud Nothings, Craig Finn and More

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

The first HUGE new release day of 2012, so strap in and get ready for a pretty comprehensive rundown! Dave Sumner's got your jazz picks, and I've got the rest. Here we go! Cloud Nothings, Attack on Memory: ALBUM OF THE DAY. Dylan Baldi grows up in a nanosecond, making a snarling rock record that hurtles forward with the speed and fury of a meteor. The sonic touchstones here are '90s emo greats like Jawbreaker, the… more »
