Very catchy!

I have been a fan of Ivy for sometime. As it is with any infectious band - Ivy just doesn't release as often as I would like. I can keep myself pretty happy in the meantime with the side projects of the Ivy members including Brookville and Paco. But now ... a new discovery for me - Club 8. Club 8 is for me as close to Ivy as I've heard. While they have their own personality - they have the same infectious grooves and beautifully ethereal vocals. I typically download a track at a time but after listening to about 7 samples across three releases I know I want everything Club 8 has released - starting with this one.

Needs a good Tweaking

Ok, Kids, Vocals and harmonies are pleasant enough but even though we're talking alt rock here, it's falling into the "American Idol(Everybody wants to be Mariah or Whitney)syndrome"... It hasn't been done to death yet but it's ailing quite a bit. One more tidbit: Please use drum machines only on demos or techno when real ones don't capture the feeling implied.

They Say All Music Guide

All bubblegum pop, breakbeats, and xylophones, Friend I Once Had was a step forward from the fey gestures Club 8 had once been known for. The demure indie rock that had fertilized 1996′s Nouvelle was given an acoustic disco makeover, and it gave the band a new level of credibility. Vocalist Karolina Komstedt was as sweet as ever, but it was Johan AngergĂ„rd who seemed most responsible for the change, embedding a warmth into the album that borrowed equally from Vangelis, British strum’n'bass, and happy/sad Neil Tennant ballad construction.
