Intruding On A Silence

Colin Chin’s debut is pretty standard for the genre. Built up around his talented acoustic guitar leads are mostly slow-paced contemporary instrumental soundscapes that feature lush synthesizer beds and typical supplemental instrumentation like wood flute and trumpet. While Chin’s flair for arrangement ensures the wholeness of each piece — especially “Ayers Rock” and “March Through the Queen’s Garden” — all the hissing keyboards have a tendency to overshadow his guitar. Guest shots from Chin’s fellow Group 87ers Mark Isham and Patrick O’Hearn are also more prominent than Chin’s own work, which can sound hesitant at times. Overall, Intruding on a Silence is a satisfactory if not particularly memorable solo debut. – Johnny Loftus
