From bouts of bad luck to a prickly, renewed sense of purpose
2011 | Label: Dualtone

Getting dropped by two labels (Fat Possum, Interscope) and losing three founding members can't seem to keep the Colour Revolt down on their second disc. If anything, frontman Jesse Coppenbarger and guitarist Sean Kirkpatrick have emerged from the winter of their discontent with a prickly, renewed sense of purpose; slinging dynamic, dagger-like riffs alongside keyboardist Brooks Tipton and former members of Norma Jean (drummer Daniel Davison) and the Whigs (bassist Hank Sullivant, who's also manning the boards on The Cradle). That's at least the case on such lip-curling, amp-singeing mission statements as "8 Years," "Mona Lisa" and the album's tight, towering title track. Elsewhere, the Mississippi -based group stretches out with blood-letting ballads ("Our Names," "Everything Is the Same") and synthetic shades ("Each Works," "Reno") that color right outside the lines of the Colour Revolt itself.
