A True Classic

lj2kplus

For those new to the MC known as Common, this is a must have. The production and lyrics are tight. The energy on the title track Resurrection will give you goose bumps. Other tracks like Communism and I Used to Love H.E.R. (Hip Hop in its Essence is Real) will keep your head bobbing and your mind on what hip hop once was.

1994 people, this album dropped 16 years ago! So sick, a must for anyone who knows anything about hip-hop, this is a true classic. From start to finish an amazing album. Orange Pineapple Juice, Chapter 13, off the hook.

Chicago's finest!

Bobbo

Cut my teeth on this album and it still holds a place in my heart. Crazy when you think he was making this back in 94 when most people were still stuck on West Coast gangsta rap.

Six Degrees of Donny Hathaway

By Hua Hsu, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Although Chicago is often praised for its blues, jazz, and house music, the city has failed to be successful when it comes to rap. One of the few Chicago MCs who has enjoyed any type of national attention is Common Sense, whose complex style of rapping and jazz-flavored tracks inspire comparisons to De La Soul, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Pharcyde. On his sophomore effort, Resurrection, the South Sider doesn’t hesitate to let you know that he has considerable technique, and in fact, he sometimes displays too much of it for his own good. Nonetheless, his intelligence, wit, and originality make this CD impressive. Resurrection’s standout track is “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” which seems to describe a lover’s moral and spiritual decline, but is actually addressing what Common views as hip-hop’s decline (in particular, gangsta rap’s exploitation of sex and violence). Also quite noteworthy are “Nuthin’ to Do” (which speaks out on the deterioration of Chicago’s neighborhoods), and the introspective “Book of Life,” a commentary on trying to keep it together in a society that has lost all traces of sanity. – Alex Henderson
