My Least Favorite Bright Eyes

I guess because it came out the same day as "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning," which I bought the same day. As a Bright Eyes fan, I would want it in my collection, but it's the one I listen to the least.

Besides having a great title, this is Bright Eyes most underrated album. The intro to this is his best one yet. Gold Mine is one of the most haunting and beautiful songs in electronic. Arc of Time is OK. Down In A Rabbit Hole is dark and cold with perfect execution. The unorthodox electronic percussion on Take it Easy is amazing. The whole thing has amazing production. The only problem is that it may not have catchy enough hooks. Bright Eyes fans can get into it easily enough anyways.

Digital Ash in a Digital Urn is designed to be the musical polar opposite to the simultaneously-released I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, to be the ambitious, modernistic electronic record that stands in contrast to the sepia-toned, classicist acoustic LP. The production and arrangements may have changed, but Conor Oberst’s preference to lyrics over music remains the same. Nevertheless, there is more variety and dynamicism on Digital Ash, which makes it a more interesting listen than its companion, even if it’s hard not to escape the feeling that the album is Bright Eyes’ take on the Postal Service’s Give Up. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
