Liz Fraser goes Southern Gothic
2006 | Label: Ever Records / !K7 Records

Both Cortney Tidwell's grandfather and mother performed at the Grand Ole Opry, but you'd be hard-pressed to hear it in her debut album. More often than not, Tidwell is busy crafting the sorts of sonic landscapes that would be at home on a ’80s 4AD record. Opener, “Eyes Are at the Billions,” for example, pits an at-first hesitant guitar figure against a backdrop of bells until the song bursts forth into widescreen with five devastating drum hits and what can only be described as her backing band's Mogwai moment.

It's a harbinger of things to come. Tidwell makes her way through the album's opening six songs like a Southern Gothic Liz Fraser. The single, “The Missing Link” is the obvious touchstone, featuring a simple, driving beat and a backing that allows Tidwell to flex her cords and earn the Bjork comparisons that she so often receives, while “I Do Not Notice” tears up her voice into megabytes and drops them into place over warm, pulsing synths and little else.

In the latter-half of the record, things are less striking, but there are moments of brilliance — namely “Society,” which may just be the most traditional piece on the record. A duet featuring… read more »

bjork?

mumeino

i'm going to assume the earlier reference to bjork is because courtney has electronic smatterings in her music. to say she sounds like bjork is entirely misleading. everyone is borrowing from everyone these days just don't listen to it if you don't like it. i happen to think this is a very pretty alt-folk album. cortney's voice has a great timbre.

Almost like having a girlfriend

Evet

I first heard her song off of a compilation and then sought her out, was pleased to find it here. I downloaded pretty much everything and have been moved by it all. At times evoking a tender confiding intimacy and others weaving a stately granduer, with wide ambient touches and her sweet unmistakable inflection, this is a work of art. Will you be my girlfriend?

Wake me up when it's over.

I was listening to Pandora this morning and heard the title track from this disc. I thought it sounded quite nice and I liked the character of her voice. Unfortunately I logged in to my emusic account and downloded the whole disc, yikes what a waste of space! I can't find anything of any value in this production. Although this girl does have a nice voice she is not innovative at all. I was fooled by the fact that she uses some of Bjork's motifs, but I'm even getting tired of hearing those ideas from Bjork herself. This work is very depressing on so many levels, I can see why people find it hypnotic, my brain is numb after listening to this.

I like better every time I listen to it. Lots of rich detail in here, and an edge of mystery that doesn't seem to get played out.

A really fantastic album, must download

eclecticmetric

This album is really a find...interesting, innovative alt-country that retains its pop sensibilities. Ms. Tidwell is damn talented. She also has an awesome early, largely instrumental eponymous EP on sissy bragg records...get on it E-music!

Lovely album ... not country/folk in my opninion

funkybarb

I love this album but Cortney Tidwell is not country/folk despite having family roots in Nashville. Her vocals sound a lot like Bjork on some tracks and the arrangements are much more electronic. I would describe her as alternative singer/songwriter. I'm worried that the genre classification here may be steering a lot of people away from discovering this amazing talent.

hypnotic!

I found this in the monthly emusic email on Country/Folk... I downloaded a few samples based on prior reviewers' advice ("Pictures", "Missing Link", "La La" "Society") and was instantly captivated by the quality of her voice and fine musicianship of the band. This is really great stuff - now I'm downloading the rest of the album & hoping she's destined for a great, long career.
