Cristina, Doll In The Box
2004 | Label: ZE Records / The Orchard

A woman both very much of her times and several years ahead of them, Cristina Monet did Madonna before Madonna had the chance. More an actress of aural dramas than an actual singer, there's rarely a note that Cristina doesn't miss. But her typically acidic delivery speaks clearly of her smarts (she's a Harvard grad), although her songwriting contributions on her debut album (originally titled Cristina upon its initial 1980 release) are minimal. Infectious, upbeat, quality dance music

bernieodonnell80

I need to rock-out the tunes while I'm on the treadmill (but not that top-40 gym music crap), and Doll in the Box fits the bill. With crazy beats, horn-powered instrumentation throughout, and Cristina's sexy voice, this one's a keeper.

Is That All There Is?

I've loved this song since I heard it on the radio when it was first released, but I was not quick enough to get it on vinyl before it was withdrawn. Now I've got it! Great. Haven't heard the rest of the album yet, but I'm going to give it 5 stars on the basis of this song.

Not Exactly Your Parent's Disco Music...

Godozo

With a hot babe on the cover and the title "Doll In The Box," why would it not be a hit? Well...First, Ze Records was hardly a power player, although it definitely had an eye for interesting music. Then there are the song titles and subjects, which don't so much glorify the disco lifestyle as lampoon, mock and rip into it. Indeed, a song not on the original LP (Is That All There Is) was kept out of release because of the lyrical and attitude changes. However, this is good stuff and as long as you are willing to accept that this is different from most of the dance stuff that's ever come out, you'll find this worth downloading and listening to.

Say Yes to No

By Douglas Wolk, Contributor

Around 1978, a handful of bands in downtown New York City who all knew each other tried to answer the central question of post-punk: "why does rock music have to sound a certain way?" The groups that came to be identified as the "no wave" scene rejected every kind of orthodoxy of pop music, from tunefulness to conventional instrumental skill - what the Ramones and other punk bands were doing, by contrast, was practically bourgeois… more »
