Least Pretentious??!?

thisisaripbutohwell

About the review at top: What's more pretentious than a music critic who can't rock out like these guys can? All of their releases are amazing. Although Monkeypot and Stampede are a lot more relaxed which is not my style personally. Amoeba should be on here but it's not at the time of this writing - download all of that plus Guest, Host and Bumpa and you'll be doing pretty good. In case you hadn't heard the Mothership arriving, Critters Buggin' is some of the best music out there if you like a funky/new/free jazz style with a touch of weird and a lot of anti-establishment. They Say All Music Guide

The first album from Seattle’s Critters Buggin’ was probably the least-pretentious of the bunch, mildly swaying between background electronic effects and the gazed-out art funk rock that would predominately reappear in later years. Hindered by awkward sub-torrential jazz in tracks like “Kickstand Hog,” the album’s best bits were often difficult to find on initial listens, but they were there. “T-Ski” goes a bit thrashy like Marilyn Manson alternately picking up and battering in a sax and “Shag” and “Los Lobos” use the crackly sample effect to create a psychologically loose chatter of suggestive basslines and cymbal-heavy percussion. – Dean Carlson
