Crooked Still, When I First Came To This Country
Label: Signature Sounds / Entertainment One Distribution

Largely forming out of the conservatory world, this alternative bluegrass five-piece have all the instrumental chops of a classical chamber group. "When I First Came to this Country," an eMusic exclusive non-album track, perfectly highlights both Crooked Still's deftness and restraint. Over a rollicking banjo line, vocalist Aoife O'Donovan sweetly sings a tale of crossing seas and borders for a new life. Her voice, a pillow-ier take on Gillian Welch's high harmonies, are at the core of the tune's lush feel.

Great song

Hard to believe they left if off of Still Crooked. One of my favorite songs of 2008.

LOVE IT!

I downloaded their other album and became an instant fan when I heard Ain't No Grave, I can't get enough of this group. There are a lot of Christian references in their songs, which normally I don't like, but the sound of her voice and the music is amazing! I would highly reccomend downloading their stuff if you are a fan of folk or The Be Good Tanyas.

I had the good fortune to hear this group live at the 2007 Edmonton Folk Festival. They were fabulous; she really has a lovely voice!

Nice cover of a classic song in the genre. It appears eMu got the title slightly wrong, though. Aoife's voice is beautiful, and their unique instrumentation shines through here. A bit more refined sound than your average blugrass, but no less genuine. Here's an extra star!...*
