Cutting Pink With Knives, Populuxxe
2007 | Label: Holy Roar Records / IODA

Are Cutting Pink With Knives mellowing a little bit? It's a bit hard to believe, but the group's second record sees the trio toning down the spastic splatter of genres of their debut and writing honest-to-goodness pop songs. Sure, they're not the type of pop songs you'd bring home to your parents, but they are "songs," which is a step up from the noisy ideas that comprised Alef, Alef, Alef!. For those in love with the soul of wit, however, Cutting Pink's 16 new songs clock in at a cool 25 minutes. And there's plenty of spasms to be had: "Coasts" is like a dystopian electrometal fantasy that turns into the a group shoutalong worthy of the Blood Brothers. "Laser Hannon," on the other hand, moves from synthpop ditty into a slow and grooving sludge, only to transform yet again for a thrashing finale. But hidden in between these noisy and disjointed flights of fantasy? An older, more mature Cutting Pink With Knives. Who woulda thunk it?
