Her duet with Sarah McLachlan is fantastic!
simply amazing, cyndi's voice sends me into another world
I agree that these songs benefit from losing the 80's arrangements. Hearing Cyndi sing without the pinched-off, little girl, squeaky style of her early singles makes you realize what a remarkable voice she has. She doesn't just sing, instead embodying the song and communicating layers of emotional depth with her vocals. She's an incredible live performer - engaging, fun, and sensual as only a woman who is entirely comfortable in her own skin can be! Highlights here are "Time After Time," "Fearless," and the darkly sultry "She Bop" (so much better than the original). Well worth the downloads!
Okay, the idea of rerecording all the old dance pop hits acoustically with famous guest stars sounds like a has been's desperate bid for a late career hit. I wouldn't have given this disc a second thought until I heard a few tracks on the radio. I'm just right age to have been listening to the original released on my walkman while riding my bike to school, eh? And while they still retain a certain fondness even now, the arrangements of the original singles have a strong 80's vibe which hasn't dated well. On the other hand, removing the electronic aspect really brings these songs back to life again. Time has deepened the interpretive quality of Lauper's voice. I'm only on my second listen through the CD at this point. So far, so good. I keep waiting to cringe.
