A street-smart comic with familial softness takes his expert routine to the stage.
Label: Comedy Central Records

This 2005 disc seems to take its name from Hughley's banter with a kind-spirited heckler, who interrupts the comic's routine to call him a genius. "I don't even know how to spell genius!" Hughley replies. "I'm the genius of the GED, goddamn it. You know what's fucked up? My kids know I have a GED, so they won't let me help them with their homework!" This seemingly impromptu bit is Hughley in a nutshell: He's a street-smart wise-ass molded from Richard Pryor, but with a contemporary familial softness. And while most of his political observations are more cogent than they are unique, Hughley has a remarkable ease with himself onstage, and it translates well to audio.

If you like standup, you will love this performance

EMUSIC-0215D840

I have enjoyed standup for more years than I care to mention. This performance ranks with the best. I liked this so much, i thought i would let others know that this is a lot of fun. Hughley is so comfortable with the audience, its like being at a party listening to someone tell great stories. He has the ease of Cosby, the wit of Pryor, and the insight of Bruce. The thing I like about D L. is he keeps you laughing and thinking as if he is talking directly to you. worth every dollar folks.

Best eMusic Comedy Download

jazzmine

This is even comparable to the best of Carlin here at eMusic. When he poops, it lands on Dane Cook's head. Now that's when DC is funny.

Post-Millennial Comedy

By Jay Ruttenberg, eMusic Contributor

If, by the turn of the millennium, the album format was a budding curio, the comedy record seemed like a bona fide relic from a long-gone era when people gathered around turntables smoking strange cigarettes and wearing fake arrows through their heads. Oddly, the medium has not only survived into the digital age, but staged a minor comeback. There are a number of reasons for its resilience: the launch of Comedy Central's CD imprint; the… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Unlike his three cohorts on the court of The Original Kings of Comedy, D.L. Hughley has quietly amassed a body of work that rivals — if not bests — the works of Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac. His show The Hughleys lasted longer than Cedric’s show and Harvey’s show, and his standup dates and specials consistently sell out. His first record takes samples from his most recent tour, and is a textbook example of observational humor. On the surface, Hughley could be considered to be just another comic with a foul mouth. But closer observation reveals a venomous disdain — on par with Chris Rock, Sam Kinison, and other legends of the genre — for the lack of common sense in the world. He covers the topics predictably — the war in Iraq, children, social issues, and entertainment scandals — but his delivery is fresh and energetic. A long overdue debut, but a very welcome and highly entertaining one. – Rob Theakston
