Scoring one for the nice guys
2010 | Label: Arts & Crafts / IODA

Canadian folkie Dan Mangan's Polaris Prize-nominated second LP sounds just like its name: Nice, Nice, Very Nice. Behind him are layers of acoustic and electric guitars, shouted choruses and sometimes whistles and keyboards, as he sings about road trips, indie queens and love interests making out with other guys. Most memorable, though, is the twee second track, "Robots," in which he sings, "Robots need love too/ They want to be loved by you" with a harmonized chorus of backup singers. Sure, it's a bit precious, but, like the rest of the set, all in good fun.

Wonderful

LyonsMoose

Beautifully arranged with plenty of room to breathe, this album is refreshing, smart, and emotional from start to finish. Start with "Road Regrets," "Basket," and "Indie Queens are Waiting" then get the whole thing. One of the year's best.

Full Album Companion to Roboteering EP

Baefild

Dan Mangan's "Nice, Nice, Very Nice" recycles 3 or 4 songs from his EP. The album is as strong of an album as I've bought recently. I'll need to listen to it more to really give it the proper analysis but as of two full times through it seems like a very strong full album from a rising force in the indie rock/alt country scene.
