This train is bound for glory.
Label: Festival Five / Virtual

With its locomotive artwork and chug-chug sound effects, not to mention a remake of Louis Jordan's 1946 hit "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" enlivened with Jamaican toasting and blurping tuba, Dan Zanes 'fifth family album seems a none-too-subtle shout-out to the boys in his audience — Brooklyn's beloved kid-music maven painting himself Thomas-the-Tank-Engine blue. But Zanes is no shallow thinker, and those easy signifiers are just the beginning. Catch That Train! is a subway ride through musical neighborhoods, with stops at southern gospel ("The Welcome Table," featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama), Mexican folk ("Mariposa Olé," with bandmate Barbara Brousal), rustic Scottish balladry ("Loch Lomond," with guest Natalie Merchant), South African chant (the breathtaking "Pigogo," with the Children of Agape) and even Depression-era protest ("I Don't Want Your Millions, Mister," with the hilariously titled How Not To Get Rich Orchestra). It's his finest outing since Rocket Ship Beach in 2000.

Zanes's world is undeniably romantic — an urban utopia where races mingle, small-town values abound and a lilting cacophony of banjos, brass and pump organ cuts through the barbed wire of class differences and cultural misunderstandings. But his affection for disparate genres is so apparent, and his optimism so sincere,… read more »

When our boy was growing up I swore that I would only play 'real music' for him, not kids' stuff. Well, this is 'real music' for sure. Dan imbues such joy of music and community in his work. I saw him play with teh Del Fuegos when I was in college and I've seen him play three times with my son. Each show (all 4) have been memorable.

Kids music that a parent can love

Skydog7

Probably my favorite Dan Zanes. My kids and I love this album. Lots of old folk songs to sing along to, and some great new tunes (Catch that Train, Let's Shake). Well worth the 12 credit d/l.

Extremely cool music driven adults, turn into extremely cool music driven adults....with kids. This is what we put on. So, listen to me, my Eskamos from New York (at least I give your city the courtesy of upper case) and the RADbassPlayer's from Waukesha,WI, hate to tell ya this, but it's a kid thing, you have to have kids to know that this is great kid music, I'm guessin' you're not there yet. Belle and Sebastian have a new EP I think. :-)

Catchy Tunes, Catch That Train!

Leiza

Love the songs! Saw them played in Playhouse Disney. Did you know that Dan Zanes and Friends are shown there? You'll have to watch out for them in between the shows like Jojo's Circus, Doodlebops, Higglytown Heroes, etc. They are worth watching for. Very catchy tunes, even for adults. Good job, Dan Zanes and Friends!

NICK CAVE!!!!

HelenaBasket

I swore I'd never buy children's music for my daughter - too annoying and mind-numbingly dull. Well a friend recommended Dan Zanes to me, said it was music you could listen to with your baby and not want to shoot yourself. I have to say it's better than that and when I saw my favorite, Nick Cave, was on the album I had to break down and buy it. Dan Zanes is for thinking people who want their children to have an appreciation of truly great music. This is a good starting point. Afterall a 6 month old can't exactly appreciate Led Zepplin yet... 6 more months.

Good Luck With Your Family Band

By Dan Zanes, eMusic Contributor

it's no secret that starting a band is a pretty good idea. i recommend a family band if you have a family around but maybe you don't, so all right, why not round up a few people in your neighborhood. if you play instruments that's great but if not, you can just sing. it's still a band. the crucial ingredient is spirit and a willingness to try something new with other people. the only other thing you'll… more »
