Wow.

Daniel Owino Misiani is a legend of Kenyan Benga music, and this is (apparently) some of his later material, from the 1980's. It is absolute fire. A lot of African music enthusiasts on this site compare Benga to Soukous by calling Benga "sharp" where Soukous is "billowing," but that's narrowing the dynamic of this music a little too much. Always at least two guitars running up and down the neck...one of them punctuated and distorted, one of them supple and softer, but both of them miraculously interlocked at all times. Honestly, it's amazing to me that eMusic has taken on the education of its subscribers in authentic African music, and I'm so grateful.

Flashy Zairians get the press, but Misiani’s Shirati Band skips the hyper-kinetic overkill for a straightforwardness that updates what John Storm Roberts calls the Kenyan plain-man style. This compilation of ’80s material is chock full of more goodness than even the best soukous CDs. No gimmicks, no machines, no excuses for missing this. – Carl Hoyt
