Dark Machines, Gears
2006 | Label: Elektrotribe / Zebralution

Macedonia's Nikolce Vasilevski completed his first tracks in 1992, mimicking the sound of early junglists U96, The Prodigy and 2Unlimited. As time went on, Vasilevski has taken a studious approach to the genre, analyzing the various strands of drum ‘n'bass as they unfolded before his ears. That's probably why his debut record under the Dark Machines moniker sounds like a thesis defense, in which Vasilevski masterfully executes fluid jazz breaks (“DnB Science”), straight-ahead bangers (“220″) and even makes room for a matronly vocalist (“Firewater”). While Vasilevski may lose points for trying to cover all the bases at once, he more than makes up for it with his superior drum programming and arrangements. Listen up, class is in session.

For Bassheads there are a few reasons to download a some tracks from this album. First, as the Emusic reviewer stated you can here the influence of early Jungle here. I think more so in the synth chords and pads than in the actual drum programming. As for the drum programming I wouldn't call it sloppy, but it isn't innovative by any stretch of the imagination. There are, in my opinion a few worthwhile jams on the album--DnB Science has a nice funky feel to it, if not cheesy old school MC style vocal samples. Tears and Fear is Futile have that throw back synth and vocal sound. Otherwise the tracks feel like "filler" tracks DJ's spin sometimes--listenable, but they don't get my feet moving. On a final note I don't know why one reviewer recomended Hospital Records releases over this. Even as a Hospital fan, if you are looking for more mature/complex Drum and Bass that has the feel of Gears (dark synths, dark drums) look to System Recordings or Concord Dawn.

Great Album

rom1

The album is huge, greatly balance between breaks and themes! Firewater, 220 and Fear is Futile are definitely for the clubs and are balanced with more Jazzy Tracks like Unfinished Business or DnB science with a lot of groove Great Stuff!

Amateur Hour

I've got to agree with SCHMIDI. This is a pretty amateurish collection of tracks with badly sequenced drums and a thrown-together feel. You're better off checking out Hospital Records' line-up or something.

well...

SCHMIDI

Some heavy drums (that are not sequenced well at all) and some lush synths (that dont fit at all). Sounds like somebody who just got a nice studio and wanted to make DnB without understanding it well.
