A Fitting Tribute to a great Singer/Songwriter

10ACPL8

I had the pleasure of knowing Chris. It's great that so many of his brilliant songs are here on one great CD. It's tragic that he had to pass away to garner some attention. Chris was a wonderful live performer. I spent a wonderful night at a house party that the Hacienda Brothers performed at. It was one of those magical moments of Rock N' Roll that will make me smile till the day I die. R.I.P. My Friend.

Respectfully worthwhile

Average-Nights-Jack

A tribute album that justifies it's creation for one of the un-sung heroes of the Californian / Austin music scene. Thumbs up to Dave Alvin for the concept and making it happen with some superb, eclectic performances. There's not a bad track among the 18 and depending on your own taste there are some quite sublime gems. For me the more obtuse and less obvious participants of Dan Penn and Boz Scaggs hit the mark, but Robbie, Joe and Alejandro are not far behind, although the Los Lobos rendition of the title track is subtle, haunting and beautiful. I could go on and wax much much more. If you like tributes / compliations then you can not go wrong with this. It might even lead you into some artists that so far have escaped you (there's 18 to pick from). Well done eMusic.

Back to the cradle of my youth...

Thank you Dave Alvin for taking me back to North Long Beach in the 50's and 60's. A great tribute to a great musician who never got his due.

A Great Tribute Album

ToasKokopelli

Most of these things fall flat. I had no clue who Chris Gaffney was, but am fan of most of artist on there so I picked up. Not a bad song, or a bad performance can be found. I think the "best" on here will be personal. I love John Doe's track myself.

The release date mentioned above (March 31, 2009) is incorrect. It was released on May 26, 2009. But a great album for sure, and here's hoping it gets the deserved attention that Gaffney never received when he was alive.
