fathead straight ahead is still fathead

I tend to like records made by jazzbos who have made a living playing r&b, or r&b guys that have made a living as jazzbos. This record illustrates what I mean for the most part. His tone is warmer, dare i say "fatter" than most, and it works well with this classic jazz type of ensemble loaded with top flight players. I could do without the flute, and i wouldn't sit through the 11 minute piece, but the rest is moving, soulful and sounds good after a couple dave holland/dave douglas/chris potter songs have flown by.

The MAN

I like this one together with "I Remember Brother Ray" best of his records. Tracks to start with: passing through, lonesome head, fast lane 'Fathead' is one of my favourite sax-players.

At the age of 70, veteran tenor saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman is in prime form throughout this well-rounded set. He jams bebop on Charlie Parker’s “Visa,” shows off his large tone on the ballads “Time After Time” and “When I Fall in Love,” romps on the boogaloo “Shakabu,” pays tribute to his former boss Herbie Mann on “Passing Through,” and plays flute quite expertly on “Song for the New Man.” Also quite worthy are a pair of Newman’s newer songs, “Fast Lane” and “Lonesome Head.” Trombonist Curtis Fuller is in excellent form during his six appearances and pianist John Hicks leads a particularly supportive rhythm section. Highly recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans, this set shows that David “Fathead” Newman, who has had a diverse career, is at heart a big-toned swinger in the tradition of Gene Ammons. – Scott Yanow
