fits the bill

brwnmamba

I wanted pleasant music I could listen to with my parents on a long drive - this fits the bill. My Mom and Pops like him now, even though they still listen to records. This is also an album that you can play at work if you have people from different age groups - it's an album that everyone can agree on. (Sorry, sometimes you need this type of music).

Respectable Man, Respectible Pop

FlyTherapy

David Gray occupies that strange nether-region between indie and downright pop. His nasally voice (and hip sneakers) keep his indie cred in tact, his expertise with a hook, an acoustic guitar, and a loop keep him at the top game of pop. Like the older brother you always wanted to be, David Gray is doing it; he's got tunes, swagger, and a voice. There are moments during 'Sail Away' and 'Please Forgive Me' when it's absolutely, heartbreakingly fantastic. Download without caution.

What about 'You're Beautiful' and 'Fast Cars'?

Dennis_Scotchbrook

His two biggest hits are missing.

Love It

SarrahO

I love David Gray but was bummed they don't have White Ladder on here as well. My old copy is all scratched and doesn't work very well at all.

sail away with me...

Renegayde

I only have White Ladder, but I really dig Sail Away, Babylon, and Please Forgive Me from that album. I can see how some people wouldn't dig David Gray, but his mellow strumming hits a note in my soul without coming off as totally hokie.

I didn't expect that much when I first saw this album, but I really do like most of the songs! Highly recommended!

Listen. Enjoy. Repeat.

I listen to this album at least 5 times a week. I love cranking it up on my stereo and getting lost in the lyrics and rhythm. a definite download!

Fantastic Pop

TangerineLemming

Fantastic little pop songs are at once catchy and beg repeat listens. Though it's nothing groundbreaking, good songwriting is still a joy to hear, and this is well worth a little indulgence.

Shades of Nicolai Dunger

jibrima

After a quick listen to the clips of this CD (which I've subsequently downloaded, of course...) I immediately heard a vocal similarity to Nicolai Dunger, another great singer/songrwriter. The nice thing about David Gray is that I can actually understand what he's saying. Nicolai can be rather unintelligible at times, but still great stuff.

They Say All Music Guide

Those looking to score their Sunday afternoons with polished, mid-tempo ruminations of life and love could do much worse than this compilation of David Gray’s best work. “Babylon” is the only track to have previously enjoyed much chart success in the States, and many American listeners will find Greatest Hits to be more of a primer to Gray’s acoustic-fueled style than a collection of past hits. But for returning fans — particularly those who already own Shine: The Best of the Early Years, also released in 2007 — Greatest Hits is a cohesive disc that paints the picture of a seasoned songwriter. Gray didn’t start writing hit songs until four albums into his career; as a result, these tracks sound sophisticated and tasteful, quite possibly because they draw their maturity from years of touring, recording, and label-hopping. Also included are 14 pages of liner notes (written by Gray himself in track-by-track format) as well as two new numbers, “You’re the World to Me” and “Destroyer,” which bookend the CD with the sort of clean, crisp pop/rock that will always find a home on adult contemporary charts. David Gray’s music doesn’t quite electrify, but it rarely fails to please, making Greatest Hits a nice commercial companion to the fans-only appeal of Shine. – Andrew Leahey
