Deborah Cox, The Promise
2008 | Label: Deco Recording Group / Egami

Deborah Cox has had a long career in mainstream, dancefloor-angled R&B. She was a backup singer for Whitney Houston before going solo, and the more ballad-y numbers on Promise (especially "Saying Goodbye") highlight this connection, with some ringing upper register acrobatics. It's impressive how much of the production here, though, is firmly contemporary: leadoff track "Love is Not Made For Words" could be a Ryan Leslie production for synth diva Cassie and "Down 4 U"'s… read more »

Amazing Vocals, Mediocre Songs

mlovelan79

Deborah's vocals are amazing! Too bad I don't care enough for any of these songs to download them though. Based on this, as well as previous albums, I strongly believe she needs to work with better songwriters so she can truly shine.

i agree with the other review. the last i remember of d.cox, she was in the dance scene for a good time. this album is a surprise. it's definitely far too short. #3 the best track!

avg at best

she has a beautiful voice, but she is lost and forgotten in the world of pop divas. with that stated it sounds like her album should have come out a few years ago. this album is reminiscent of her previous albums, where she had a few good singles that dominated the album, but overall the album left u wondering what songs didn't make the cut and if maybe the should have. if anything Deborah Cox is consistent which is why she has fallen below the mainstream radar.

Good Comeback

candyyam7

She still has IT! Expected more soulful ballads to showcase her vocal ability. Overall a good album. Fave tracks 2, 6, 8 and 10.
